Exercise and Healthy eating can add years to your life .
Seniors, Let's start off right, let me make this clear you cannot target "problem areas"
on your body through exercising. That's right, you cannot spot reduce "excess weight" off
your middle by only doing sit-ups , curls and waist exercises! When you exercise you must begin an overall loss of weight for your whole body. Being a former Physical Ed. teacher , I have seen students work tiredless trying to reduce their abdominal fat by doing hundreds of sit-ups and curls each day. I will tell you just as I would tell them " It won't work" As I reflect back on the theme song of my favorite movie Rocky. " There is Know Easy Way Out " meaning that If you want to lose excess weight around the middle , you will have to lose over your entire body.
So what is the first thing I must do to lose that unsightly stomach fat and love handles?
1) Food intake..
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day (80 oz). Drink one full glass before each meal.
- Eat five servings of vegetables and fruits per day
- LIMIT fried foods and cheese to one half of your regular intake.
- AVOID processed sugar (for example: sodas, cookies ,cakes and candy).Try yogart.
- Eliminate fatty red meat - only lean red meats (1-2 times weekly)
- Meal spacing is very important. Eat something at least every 2 hours - make it 6 smaller
meals per day, instead of only 3 large ones. Do not wait till you are hungry before eating.
- The average adult consume 2500 to 3000 calories per day , If you can reduce your caloric
intake to less than 1500 calories per day. "guess what" half the battle will be over.
2) Cardio-Vascular Exercise
Losing those love handles and increasing the metabolism so you can lose weight more
effectively are all tied into a consistent cardiovascular and resistance training program.
The stored fat around your mid-section is typically the last to leave your body.
even after months or years of an exercising. It is difficult to lose those last few
pounds of fat around the mid-section for men and for women, the last few pounds of fat
is typically stored in the hips , buttocks and thigh region. Begin the very low impact daily
work-out and you will be on your way to a healtier you.
- You should do 20-45 minutes of light impact walking 4-5 times per week. There is no excuse, you can use a treadmill , walk in the mall , walk around your house or stay in side and walk in place, do what is convenient and available to you.
- You should, also mix in 2-3 times a week of basic calisthenics like the basic band
exercises on my video. Band exercises are good for the seniors , because they are light weight and safe. It will take several weeks before you start to see the physical
benefits or your diet and exercise program. But ,you will see almost immediate results
in your energy level, overall mental alertness when exercising daily and you know at our age
mental alertness is extremely important.
- Follow the sample routine on my video and the exercise demo's listed on the left of the page , a long with our recommendated food intake , In four to six weeks you will begin to see some amazing results.
Good luck , R. McNeill
Exercise Lowered Death Risk
Women who were inactive were twice as likely to die as women who got regular exercise,
regardless of their weight or size. The effect was seen in men, but to a lesser degree. Men with inactive lifestyles were associated with a 28% increase in death among men who exercised on a weekly basis .
The study appears in the February issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
